Every year I make a list for the Makeup Show New York. At the show I buy products to replenish my pro makeup kit and as well as personal favorites. One the advantages of being a makeup artist is seeing how each brand fares with the clientele I serve, what works with dry skin or mature skin or what suits flash photography versus daylight. Last year, my big purchases were a set of Glamcor lights and a complete system of Temptu Airbrush with air pods of foundation and blusher. These two have paid off exponentially, having proper lighting when I do makeup is essential and using lights lets me feel 100% sure that I have done a good job. Lighting is so tricky especially when it is a hotel room for a client or a bride and more than one time, going to a NYC apartment when winter daylight is almost non-existent. My Temptu Airbrush has gotten some love although I must admit, when I do a bridal trial and show the comparison to HD makeup, the classic foundation (almost) always wins.
This year, the Makeup Show has a few additions I am really looking forward to. Some of those include the likes of Anastasia Beverly Hills, Charlotte Tilbury beauty, Sephora PRO makeup brushes, and some of my kit staples like Senna Cosmetics, Makeup Forever HD foundation, Embryolisse skincare, Face Atelier and Mario Badescu Skincare. Also, this will be my first time working at the Makeup Show, on Monday May 5th I will be at the Michael Marcus cosmetics covering half day, so stop by and say hello! As far as personal favorites, I stock up on Embryolisse, Mario Badescu and last year I bought a lot of Dermalogica.
There is also education at TMS and that is something I recommend, even if you aren’t doing makeup professionally, who doesn’t benefit from understanding color theory and correction? (I did this seminar a few years ago and learned so much about color correction on redness, scars, discoloration and brown spots). Last year, I watched Gina Brooke discuss the beginning of her career and dreams of working big clients, super inspirational and what I needed to hear. This year, I am hoping to attend Eugenia Weston’s seminar, another one of my inspirations -the woman behind Senna Cosmetics, she is doing a class on the art of contouring. And for the last three years, I never miss a Makeup Forever class, they always have outstanding speakers like Brittany James. In her seminar, Brittany used only the Makeup Forever Flash Palette and used it to do everything, foundation, blusher, eyes, it was amazing.
Another fun element for the Makeup Show NYC is the Artist’s Kit and Career Series. If you are already doing makeup (or plan on embarking in makeup artistry), this is a chance to listen to advice from pro’s who are not only working but are seasoned in their respective careers. Some of the speakers are James Vincent, Michael DeVellis, Bethany Townes, Kathy Aragon, Orlando Santiago, all very well-known AND respected makeup/ hair professionals. Last but not least, the blogger event is another fun highlight and unlike last year (I was very pregnant and not feeling so social), I am hoping to meet a few of the BBC blogger ladies and mingle.
