New Lipstick Loves / NARS, OCC Stained Gloss and Mehron B.L.A.M.E.

I want to share some amazing new products I added to my arsenal of lipsticks this past month. These were discoveries from the Makeup Show in New York, and I am featuring them because I feel they are fantastic for your lipstick essentials. If you are going to spend money on a lipstick/ gloss, might as well do it on something that is quality and doesn’t need re-applying every hour.

NARS Satin Lip Pencils – Launched a few months ago, NARS Satin lip pencil is a mix of matte/ lipstick finish more the former, it is long lasting, strong pigment and glides on nicely. LOVE IT.

Obssessive Compulsive Stained Gloss – In stores May 23 in the USA at OCC and Sephora, think gloss merged with an OCC liptar/ regular stain, finish is shiny and color payoff is big (note I didn’t use any primer or pencil). For those who love gloss with color, great product.

Mehron B.L.A.M.E. Cream Makeup – Described as body makeup, this pencil in orange comes in a very watery consistency which can be used with a strong base of lip pencil or on its own, I would use with a lip pencil to ensure long lasting color. Good product by Mehron.

Back in the USA!

facebook logo
After six years in Singapore, time has come for me to return to the USA. Living in Singapore was wonderful, it opened a door to creativity, resourcefulness and understanding, so different from living in New York and London. I entered a world so foreign to my own, it taught me to learn and accept a new ideal of beauty and appreciate what I had familiarity with. While in Asia, I made the best lemonade I could with my career, personal life, travel opportunities, and also embraced a healthy lifestyle. If any of my peers, clients and editorial friends are reading this, I owe you the trust and opportunities I had and will be forever grateful, please come visit me and keep in touch. My last weeks in Singapore were so packed with endless to-do’s, packing and quietly reflecting, I didn’t have a proper going away with anyone, goodbye’s are awful.

This weekend I will be attending the New York Makeup Show, a NARS tweet up, a blogger preview event with James Vincent and workshops by Make Up Forever and Temptu Pro. Last year, I was lucky to be in Chicago for the same event and this year, so delighted to be a part of the NY show. What I love about the Makeup Show aside from all the workshops and shopping experience, is the opportunity to listen and meet renowned fellow artists and get inspired.

I have a shopping list and of course I will be sharing my thoughts post-show. If you want real-time updates, I will be Instagram-ing and on Twitter. For Instagram, I can be found at Norahlovesmakeup_mua and on norah_s on Twitter.

New Make Up Forever Technicolor Spring 2013 Palette

TC2013_Palette-with-Effect

Two words come to mind, BOLD colors and major pigment. When I received the new Make Up Forever Technicolor Spring 2013 Palette, those were my first thoughts. This new palette is loaded with fantastic basics such as brown, beige, white and lilac and your bright tones of yellow, lime green and ski blue – two complementing accents for your makeup stash. Mostly made out of matte tones, an iridescent yellow beige and satiny yellow (limited edition), this is a fantastic array for the makeup lover and everyday woman.

From the Creator and Artistic Director of MUFE, Dany Sanz:

“I wanted to create an electrifying beauty, the kind that emanates from certain women who leave behind a craving for their radiant, magnetic appeal long after they walk out of the room. I imagined a women who could draw every eye and stop short any conversation just by walking by. This Spring, I am paying tribute to color; for me, the undeniable radiance of yellow expresses the overwhelming pull that can create such irresistible attraction and spectacular sensuality.”

I love this idea of bringing basic colors and marrying them to bold spring-like tones. A litle background on Technicolor and the name behind it

Technicolor is a film color process, which saw the light of day in 1910, and has been developed through several decades. It became the most famous process in Hollywood from 1920 -1960. Some classics like Wizard of Oz, Singing in the Rain… partly owe their success to this technique. Due to the color on the film stock that was overloaded, it was never seen before in a movie.

This palette is available in Singapore at Sephora and the Make Up Forever pro-store. For more info, please go to MUFE on Facebook.

Eye Makeup Using Maybelline Studio® Color Tattoo® 24HR Cream Gel Shadow

IMG_0168I am a huge fan of cream eyeshadow and pigments. Whenever I do makeup either on myself or a client and want a waterproof, no crease result, I will always use a product that is cream and buildable. For this gorgeous model’s makeup, the brief was no exception, she was going on a fashion show and needed to look perfect for outdoors/ sweating/ flash photography.

On her eyes, I used Maybelline Color Tattoo in Audacious Asphalt, which is like a pewter/ metal. I like this shade lots because not only does it offer subtle shimmer, you can manipulate the pigment into a deep black or even a navy blue using a powder, you just have to blend to build that color and it will work. I blended the rest of this deep smokey eye using some browns in.

Highly recommend the Maybelline Color Tattoo eyeshadows, good price point and excellent product. Can’t wait for a complete rainbow of colors!

(Hair was by Mark Cheng).

OCC Skin Concealers

IMG_0277Finally! The wait is over, the new OCC Skin Conceal concealers are in my kit. After months of waiting I got the precious five concealers sent over to me – thanks to my sister in California who always acts as my makeup keeper stateside.

In the summer of 2012 while at the Makeup Show Chicago, I tested and swatched these awesome concealers, OCC sells all vegan and cruelty-free products (not tested on animals). What I liked the most is the consistency, cream-like, hydrating, subtle and buildable quality of this product, all supremely important when you are working in types of climates/ scenarios. I didn’t get the complete set (I will eventually), instead I went for the medium yellow concealers Y2, Y3, Y4 and the reds (pink) R1 and R2 most colors which are hard to find here in Asia. I kind of regret not getting the R0 and Y0 which would have been the lightest of the concealers, good for highlighting and covering fair skin types but like stated earlier, I know I will sooner or later.

I swatched using natural light and my (hairy) forearm which is quite fair with a hint of yellow undertone, the chart on the OCC website is more a guide as you can see from the swatch. OCC concealers are availble only through the OCC website and their boutique in the Lower East Side NYC.

How To Keep Your Makeup From Melting This Holiday Party Season

It’s been a hot minute since my last entry and updates there will be, as in some minor cosmetic changes to my blog plus more. I have been trying new spas, going to events, working events all throughout the month of November.

I have compiled some GOOD advice on very simple steps that will keep your makeup fresh and looking pretty this holiday season. This is my personal routine when I am out and know there will be little time for touch ups.

Before applying makeup - Prep your skin with a good primer! This is basic makeup 101. A primer will create a nice first layer to hold that foundation or tinted moisturizer. If you are going out in the daytime, use something like Dermalogica Age Smart SkinPerfect Primer SPF 30, I blogged about it back in November, great product for the most sensitive skin types.

For an evening event, I like Smashbox Photo Finish Light Primer, it is an oil free formula and very good for those of us living in humid conditions or if you are going out to a party where lots of dancing, eating and/ or drinking will be involved.

Seal your makeup – once the eyes, face, blusher, lips are done, I highly recommend using makeup setting spray, one of my top favorites is Skindinavia which ships worldwide and is a staple in my kit. Of course makeup primer will be very useful in this party prep process but for the ultimate all day/ night secret weapon, use makeup setting spray at the end. I spritz using a tissue under my eyeliner, over my eyelids and all over the face. One word of advice I give is to make sure you cleanse very well before bed, use a makeup remover like Bioderma or if your eyes are closing and you can’t get to a sink, use makeup remover wipes! Do not sleep with makeup on, that is an open call for clogged pores and bacteria.

Blot. Blot. Blot – I love blotting paper, it is the best invention since makeup spray! Blotting paper removes a thin layer of shine and oil, it is so easy and practical, I feel it is infinite times better than applying powder. Months ago, I also blogged about my love for blotting. I use Gatsby, Muji and Clean and Clear, found at most pharmacies and beauty stores. When you blot, focus on the T-zone and pat gently to remove excess shine.

Makeup for Lynn Tan (Miss Singapore Universe 2012)

This photo was taken a couple months before Lynn was crowned winner of the Miss Singapore Universe 2012 title, makeup and hair by yours truly. Lynn is a really sweet girl and I am very happy she got chosen as she is going to represent Singapore extremely well. We met at a fashion show, talked and she asked me if we’d have an opportunity to shoot, and so we did! Photo credit goes to Mark Bautista.

Celebrity Makeup By Norah – Juliet Simms (The Voice USA)

October was a pretty magic month, I tell you. I got a call to do makeup for American vocalist Juliet Simms (she was a finalist in the show The Voice), she was in town for a press conference and a concert to raise awareness for the Chengdu Pambassador Programme. My job was to get Juliet ready to officially meet the Singapore media, both hair and makeup, no pressure. Here is one of the pictures from the day, Juliet was lovely and she is a really good singer.

Dermalogica New Age Smart SkinPerfect Primer SPF 30

When I received an invitation to attend the launch of Dermalogica’s new Age Smart SkinPerfect Primer Spf 30, I was elated. As you probably already know if you read this blog, I am a Dermalogica fan/ consumer for years, I always recommend using this brand as a regular facial treatment because I know it is excellent. If you go to a reputable salon like AsterSprings, therapists will go through a personalised service (Face Mapping as it is called), and all clients receive an accurate diagnosis of their specific skin needs. I have combination, sensitive skin and I use the Age Smart range because it addresses the problem of skin ageing, sun damage prevention and skin repair (On a daily basis I use toner, serum and eye cream).

This new Dermalogica product is an ideal match for those who use makeup and also need the skincare benefits. With ingredients like Tea extracts, Peptides, and Sodium Hyaluronate – what is not to love? One of its many virtues is that this primer contains SPF 30, and there is nothing than prevents ageing from happening like the DAILY use of a high spf factor! Trust me on this, if you want your skin to maintain its youth, protect it with spf. The Dermalogica New Age Smart SkinPerfect Primer SPF 30 is good for people with oily skin because it contains silicones that will ensure long lasting makeup application [foundation, bb cream or tinted moisturiser]. A neutral tint formulated without artificial fragrances and colors, this is a primer that’ll target enlarged pores, lines and uneven skin texture. Slather with abandon ladies, it is good for your skin.

Dermalogica is available at AsterSpring outlets in Singapore.

New! Make Up Forever Holodiam Collection

Make Up Forever’s newest addition to its range of products for this upcoming holiday season is stunning! It is an eyeshadow collection named HOLODIAM (limited edition), packed with 3D glitter and it is so beautiful, so unique, if you want to stand out during the party season, this is the product you want! HOLODIAM comes in these lovely shades (and each shade carries different hues, so fun and bling to highest power!). In the photos above, especially my eyes note the range of color, I had the white with the brown gold, it looked amazing after.

#301 Copper: Pink, orange and yellow highlights
#302 Plum: Turquoise, violet and pink highlights
#303 White: Gold, green and blue highlights
#4 Brown Gold: Yellow, green and blue highlights

(I particularly love the white as it can be used as a cheekbone and cupid’s bow highlighter). All the colors add an extra oomph to a shadow base in the eyes, that’s what HOLODIAM is all about! They can be used with a tiny drop of Aqua Seal by MUFE and adding a spray of Mist and Fix makeup setting spray.

Inside my Holiday bag from Make Up Forever was also a set of Aqua Eyes Pencils, these are waterproof must-haves for any makeup enthusiast and collector’s items like the MUFE Smokey Palette. I like them because not only they are smudge free but also can be used on the brows (the brown/ black shades). I also received Aqua Seal which is a liquid that transforms any powder into waterproof makeup. Last but not least came a set of limited edition gold lashes – see all the images below to get an idea. All these lovely items are available in Singapore at Sephora and the Make Up Forever Pro Shop on 36 Armenian Street.
