Norah Recommends These Books

img_7378-stack-of-books-q75-791x1305One of the advantages of going away and long flights is READING, lots of it. I have a few book recommendations to give, based on content, writing and interests, this in my case, is pretty much fashion and beauty.

Grace: A Memoir by Grace Coddington
– The creative director of US Vogue gives the reader a glimpse into her most interesting and extraordinary life and career, dating back to modelling in the 1960s, working in London and her years as the woman behind the scenes at US Vogue. I loved her aloof, focused and determined personality from the film The September Issue so when this book came out, I was so ready for more. It is beautifully written, candid and unpretentious, Miss Grace Coddington can do no wrong.

Isabella Blow: A Life in Fashion
– I first learned about socialite and fashion editor/ stylist British born Isabella Blow through the work of Alexander Mcqueen and a documentary about his career. Curious and most intrigued by her unique sense of style, life as a socialite and struggle with depression, I bought this book and read it with gusto. What a life and career. Good reading and anecdotes of a life cut too short.

Empress of Fashion: A Life of Diana VreelandDiana Vreeland: The Eye Has to Travel is a documentary film that’s just been released and I was most intrigued by how highly regarded this American lady was in the world of fashion. From working at Harper’s Bazaar and Vogue, to her consulting for the Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Diana Vreeland was the hardest working woman in fashion back in the 1950′s til almost her death at the age of 86. I was struck by her fortitude, vision and strength of character, this book is entertaining and most insightful.

Human Resources Magazine Feb 2012 Cover

I wanted to share one of my latest photos from the cover of Human Resources magazine in Singapore February 2012. This image was shot by Brendan Zhang with Shahrom K in art direction. Low Peck Kem is a divisional director for the Singapore Ministry of Manpower National Human Resources – she is an executive and her makeup is soft and classic. (I used Illamasqua Skin Base and Urban Decay Naked Palette).

Mrs. Low Peck Kem and I had lots in common (both have fond memories of the San Francisco Bay Area and travel). Thank you Human Resources for having me!

Portrait Makeup That Adds Pizzaz

Just wanted to share a gorgeous series I recently did hair and makeup for. My client’s name is Sian and she hails from South Africa. Photos were shot by super talented photographer Jasmine Vincent. This series is meant to be a gift for Sian’s parents, how cool is that? A portrait shoot is a memory that lasts forever. I loved every second of it, used some of my Armani and MUFE pigments and a lots of highlighting around the upper cheekbones.

Creative test inspired makeup by Lady Gaga

This week, I got some time to indulge in some creative work with Razin, Antonio, Hasina and Cassidy.  Cassidy is a Resorts World Singapore performer with a fabulous wardrobe.  All photos were shot at Pixelwave studios in Arab Street.  The makeup was inspired by the Lady Gaga Papparazi video, dark shadows, a bit of Kryolan white foundation and lots of blusher by MAC.  The eye makeup was a combination of cream and powder shadow, topped with my favourite NARS dark grey glitter pigment.

It’s been quiet (but I’ve been busy)

Sorry for the pause, it is not very like me to go M.I.A. Between shooting tests, new work, assisting gigs, a MAC presentation day by Romero Jennings from New York, Zumba, taking care of my health -blogging kind of took a backseat.  One of my highlights this week was doing makeup/ hair for a Yahoo! Asia anti-bullying campaign, it was a new experience for me as I had Vietnamese, Indonesian and Singaporean Chinese “real” girls I made up for this psa, lots of fun.

Today I am doing a creative test with uber experienced and detailed photographer Razor from Pixelwave, Antonio doing hair and Jeannie King modelling. Very exciting for all of us involved. Last week I had the pleasure of working with Eulyn from Apricot Gallery doing a beauty test, using Spring 11′ colors, all close ups.

Lipstain

This gorgeous image is a collaboration with visiting Filipino photographer Paul Frederick, the fabulous designer/stylist Rachel Lutz and the very lovely, impossibly photogenic model Jeannie King.  For this effort we were outdoors at Fort Canning park in Singapore.  I had a full day of work and needed to make sure the makeup stayed because (at least tried to).

Lip stains are a heaven send for situations like the one I described, here Bourjois Rouge Hi-Tech was applied. How does a lip stain work? It is a gloss free water tint on your lips. It feels as if you don’t have lipstick!

PS. If you want to try a home-made lip stain, go to your kitchen and grab some gelatin or Jell-O as it is called in the USA. Best to use is either a strawberry or cherry flavour, grab a cotton bud to avoid staining your fingers and if you want a bit of gloss, blend with some lip balm.

“I feel very adventurous. There are so many doors to be opened, and I’m not afraid to look behind them.” Dame Elizabeth Taylor.

PS. Just finished reading this fabulous book, the love affair between Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton.

Amorsoloesque Makeup

This photo by Candy Yam is part of the Amorsoloesque photography workshop I did makeup for on Saturday Dec 4th. It was conducted by Filipino photographer Maricris Carlos – she is an expert in this field of whimsical post-production. Putting makeup on model Alexia Giessen was great fun, I used very bold eye colours mixing Yaby pearl eyeshadows, a small touch of Face Atelier foundation with some Yaby concealer.  Another secret weapon was the Shadow Shields – they are an amazing little tool to help avoid messy racoon eyes. I spent a while working on Alexa’s eyes, they needed to stand out for the studio lighting. This workshop was fast paced and the participants like myself, live for the moment of getting the right angles. Thank you Xilver Claire Events for booking me! I loved every second of it.

I love old Hollywood. Give me Elizabeth Taylor, Sophia Loren, Lucille Ball, Marlene Dietrich, all timeless and unique!

“I am not funny. My writers were funny. My directors were funny. The situations were funny…What I am is brave. I have never been scared. Not when I did movies, certainly not when I was a model, and not when I did I Love Lucy.”
