New Kiehl’s Actively Correcting & Beautifying BB Cream SPF 50/PA ++

Derm Solutions_BBOver the course of my blogging days, I’ve discussed and researched the BB Cream phenomenon which started here in Asia. Mystified by the various formulations, I didn’t quite find a particular brand I liked with the exception of one. As with most skincare trends, all major brands have come up with their own BB creams and I have tried a lot of the Western and Asian ones. With BB cream I think a lot comes down to formulation and the individual skin needs (some like high SPF, some don’t, some color correct, others cover and brighten).

When I received my complimentary Kiehls BB Cream in Natural, I decided to test drive it in the middle of day when it is balmy and very warm here in Singapore. First, I liked the consistency of it, the BB glides on much like a tinted moisturizer and visibly evened out my skin (most of my color correcting happens around the eyes, as for the rest of my face it is not much needed). Another very amazing plus for this formula is the SPF 50++ factor, I love the high factor protection. It didn’t burn or sting at all! This Kiehl’s formula is silicone free, mineral oil free, paraben free and fragrance free, good for sensitive skin types. As the day progressed, I didn’t feel too much oil or shine build up – good effort!

Kiehl’s Actively Correcting & Beautifying BB Cream SPF 50/PA +++ retails for $52 (in SG) and is available in 3 shades – fair, light, natural. This new BB cream contains correction ingredients like Vitamin C and UV filters. I am not huge on BB creams as I am much more of a tinted moisturizer person but this particular one is VERY much worth it for medium coverage and color correcting.

Dermalogica New Age Smart SkinPerfect Primer SPF 30

When I received an invitation to attend the launch of Dermalogica’s new Age Smart SkinPerfect Primer Spf 30, I was elated. As you probably already know if you read this blog, I am a Dermalogica fan/ consumer for years, I always recommend using this brand as a regular facial treatment because I know it is excellent. If you go to a reputable salon like AsterSprings, therapists will go through a personalised service (Face Mapping as it is called), and all clients receive an accurate diagnosis of their specific skin needs. I have combination, sensitive skin and I use the Age Smart range because it addresses the problem of skin ageing, sun damage prevention and skin repair (On a daily basis I use toner, serum and eye cream).

This new Dermalogica product is an ideal match for those who use makeup and also need the skincare benefits. With ingredients like Tea extracts, Peptides, and Sodium Hyaluronate – what is not to love? One of its many virtues is that this primer contains SPF 30, and there is nothing than prevents ageing from happening like the DAILY use of a high spf factor! Trust me on this, if you want your skin to maintain its youth, protect it with spf. The Dermalogica New Age Smart SkinPerfect Primer SPF 30 is good for people with oily skin because it contains silicones that will ensure long lasting makeup application [foundation, bb cream or tinted moisturiser]. A neutral tint formulated without artificial fragrances and colors, this is a primer that’ll target enlarged pores, lines and uneven skin texture. Slather with abandon ladies, it is good for your skin.

Dermalogica is available at AsterSpring outlets in Singapore.

Favorite Everyday Products

Here is a breakdown of my favorite every day products, the kind you can’t live without (mascara and tinted moisturizer) plus eye makeup remover when I get home.

1) Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer SPF 20 (Sand) – a lightweight, reasonable coverage tinted moisturizer. This is an all day product which for the most part DOES NOT oil up or get creased. I love its texture, this blends smoothly into skin and evens out quite nicely. Perfect for Singapore weather (also great in humid and dry weather).

2) Lancome Hypnose Mascara (Black) – this was a tip from a wonderful client a few weeks back. I was at a job and this super nice client pulls Hypnose out of her makeup bag and tells me to see her lashes after three coats. SOLD. The results were lush, full bodied lashes, after a bit of brushing out excess I so impressed with the length effect, I placed my order the same evening.

Later on when it is time to remove mascara or waterproof eye products …

3) Makeup Forever Sens’Eyes (Waterproof eye makeup remover) – the best makeup remover for sensitive eyes and waterproof anything (mascara, eyeshadow, eyeliner, gel liner). This formula will clear those pesky makeup traces and won’t leave you racoon-eyed the next morning. And it comes in a handy small bottle which travels well I might add.

Le Pétronille Skincare Challenge

Week Three of my Petronille Challenge - This week is a new setting! On Monday, I travelled to San Francisco, California (USA) and the weather conditions are much different than Singapore, it is dry heat this time of the year, think Mediterranean-like temperatures. After a gruelling seventeen hour flight, I’ve been catching up on my time zone (16hrs total to be exact), sleep and keeping hydrated as much as possible. Combination skin like mine loves dry weather, I get less oily in the daytime but definitely more dry especially at night. The first two days were rough, as I was super tired and this showed in my eye area.

At any rate, I’ve been applying more of the day and night cream to compensate with the dry air, protect skin against the sun and to continue to nourish my skin while I adjust. The Elixir Anti-Age serum works exceptionally well in the daytime too!

A Maybelline Event

Ask and you shall receive. The universe must have been listening. On Pinterest, Maybelline 24HR Cream Shadow is on my wish list. Imagine the excitement when I received an invite to a blogger event on Sat Feb 25th at the lovely Covelli Italian Bistro at Orchard 313.

The event was a nice lunch and the unveiling of new products for the Asian market. The new goodies launched were Volum’ Express Magnum Ultra Comb mascara (WOW, love this super slick comb, it pretty separates the lashes much like a real comb, thickens them with no mess AND is waterproof), BB cream SPF 50 (music to my ears, excellent for under eyes and eye area – I don’t use BB all over since it tends to be overload for my skin), Maybelline Masterlight White pencil (for brightening eyes), and Maybelline Jelly Blushers in #02 and #04 colors (cream blush with soft texture and not greasy at all). See the cool gifts on my goodie bag?

This event had a fashion show, a presentation by a makeup artist and lastly a chance to learn more about these new products. As a makeup artist from a non-Asian background in skincare, it is fantastic to learn trends and product preferences here in Asia (BB cream and lashes/ mascara rank high on the list in my opinion). I had a lovely time observing, learning and listening.

Thank you Maybelline SG! I am loving my new goodies, the mascara is a MUST HAVE.

Rachel K BB Cream Review

One day while browsing at Watsons I noticed Rachel K BB cream from Korea [suspense!]. However, there were no tester products available! Since I love trying out new BB creams especially those with labels like natural or neutral color shades, I became even more intrigued. Turns out that Rachel K has a fab PR team and as soon as I reached out, a tube arrived in the mail for me to try.

First things first, Rachel K BB cream has a lovely scent, it has to be said! In terms of color, for myself, the shade was a tad too light for my face (I am more yellow undertoned and this had a lot of pink base which is does not work for me), I still like to use it as a concealer under my eyes though and on the eyelids. Why? It works very well as a brightener and since it is waterproof it stays on nicely. I like the texture, it is medium coverage I’d say, Rachel K blends quite well (not cakey at all). Another plus is that it contains SPF 35 so an added bonus to the protection of your skin. Maybe I should get sunkissed?!! Rachel K is available in Singapore at Watsons.

From their FB page:

Mineral CC (Colour Control) Cream is much-improved and refined BB cream (Blemish Balm) created and developed in Japan and Korea. It is formulated with pure minerals, making it suitable for all skin types including highly sensitive ones as the mineral ingredients do not irritate or damage the skin. It comes in shades: natural, neutral and sun-kissed.

Shiseido Anessa SPF 50

As you probably read from my posts earlier, I was away for a week in Phuket. While on the balmy beach sun which was hard to avoid under an umbrella and hat, I ran out of my usual Clarins UV Plus HP Day Screen SPF 40 by the 3rd day and using it between a few people, it was gone. Luckily on my way out, I picked up Shiseido Anessa SPF 50++ at Changi airport T1 for $38 SG dollars. It is my first Shiseido skincare purchase ever!!!

What I love about this sun cream is its application, smooth, non-oily, absorbs very fast AND most importantly offers a high level of SPF. If you want to protect your skin from sun damage, Shiseido Anessa will definitely be your best friend, it works well in humid conditions, has no smell or greasy white marks. “It is formulated with hyaluronic acid to keep dry skin feeling smooth” – this is on the box, and pretty much I agree with it.

Since purchasing Anessa, I am using it as my daily sunscreen! Unfortunately, it available only in Asia. If you are travelling by a large Asian airport like Singapore Changi, Hong Kong or Tokyo, you will find it on duty-free shops.

Back From Paradise

Last week I took time off to recharge batteries right before the Chinese Lunar New Year. Spent nearly a week in glorious Phuket, Thailand. A huge portion of the days were involved reading under an umbrella, hat, Ray Ban sunglasses, doing afternoon walks on the sand and feeling very grateful. While on vacation, I used lots of Clarins SPF 40 and 50, Clarins After Sun lotion, Ultra Swim Chlorine Removal shampoo and Aveda conditioner, the UVB rays were powerful. Every day I was like the sun police trying to keep my tribe protected, reminding them to re-apply sun lotion like a mantra. There were people around me literally baking, most were European folk.

The JW Marriott resort has a lovely spa called Mandara, of course I paid a visit to take advantage of the treatments (more on this later). On the day before our departure back to Singapore, I opted for a Zoya pedicure right on the beach (brought my own polish and top coat), it cost about $10 plus the tip. The hotel was one of the nicest places I’ve ever stayed in Asia, it was our first time away since April last year.

The image above is in the afternoon at the beach in Mai Khao, Phuket, I call it The Good Life.

Follow-Up On BB Creams

A few months ago, I blogged about the rise of the BB cream in other parts of the world like Europe and USA. Balm Blemish or BB creams are an Asian trend with many brands available at most cosmetic and pharmacy counters. This little wonder offers an all-in-one service (primer, SPF, cover, anti-aging). To me, it is like a tinted moisturizer although consistency, coverage and colours vary drastically from all the brands. My take on it is to try for yourself if you feel this might be for you. Of the brands I’ve tried/ tested, Illamasqua Skin Base offer a great range of shades and is great as foundation without the need to pile on more makeup/ powder. And Garnier BB roll on cream works beautifully for me, in fact I use it as my undereyes cream with concealer. **Note, I paid for my own Illamasqua and Garnier products.

Brands offering their own take of the BB cream include Clinique, Smashbox, Boscia, Erborian, Illamasqua Skin Base, Bobbi Brown BB and MAC Prep and Prime BB Beauty Balm.
