How To Keep Your Makeup From Melting This Holiday Party Season

It’s been a hot minute since my last entry and updates there will be, as in some minor cosmetic changes to my blog plus more. I have been trying new spas, going to events, working events all throughout the month of November.

I have compiled some GOOD advice on very simple steps that will keep your makeup fresh and looking pretty this holiday season. This is my personal routine when I am out and know there will be little time for touch ups.

Before applying makeup - Prep your skin with a good primer! This is basic makeup 101. A primer will create a nice first layer to hold that foundation or tinted moisturizer. If you are going out in the daytime, use something like Dermalogica Age Smart SkinPerfect Primer SPF 30, I blogged about it back in November, great product for the most sensitive skin types.

For an evening event, I like Smashbox Photo Finish Light Primer, it is an oil free formula and very good for those of us living in humid conditions or if you are going out to a party where lots of dancing, eating and/ or drinking will be involved.

Seal your makeup – once the eyes, face, blusher, lips are done, I highly recommend using makeup setting spray, one of my top favorites is Skindinavia which ships worldwide and is a staple in my kit. Of course makeup primer will be very useful in this party prep process but for the ultimate all day/ night secret weapon, use makeup setting spray at the end. I spritz using a tissue under my eyeliner, over my eyelids and all over the face. One word of advice I give is to make sure you cleanse very well before bed, use a makeup remover like Bioderma or if your eyes are closing and you can’t get to a sink, use makeup remover wipes! Do not sleep with makeup on, that is an open call for clogged pores and bacteria.

Blot. Blot. Blot – I love blotting paper, it is the best invention since makeup spray! Blotting paper removes a thin layer of shine and oil, it is so easy and practical, I feel it is infinite times better than applying powder. Months ago, I also blogged about my love for blotting. I use Gatsby, Muji and Clean and Clear, found at most pharmacies and beauty stores. When you blot, focus on the T-zone and pat gently to remove excess shine.

Makeup for Lynn Tan (Miss Singapore Universe 2012)

This photo was taken a couple months before Lynn was crowned winner of the Miss Singapore Universe 2012 title, makeup and hair by yours truly. Lynn is a really sweet girl and I am very happy she got chosen as she is going to represent Singapore extremely well. We met at a fashion show, talked and she asked me if we’d have an opportunity to shoot, and so we did! Photo credit goes to Mark Bautista.

Celebrity Makeup By Norah – Juliet Simms (The Voice USA)

October was a pretty magic month, I tell you. I got a call to do makeup for American vocalist Juliet Simms (she was a finalist in the show The Voice), she was in town for a press conference and a concert to raise awareness for the Chengdu Pambassador Programme. My job was to get Juliet ready to officially meet the Singapore media, both hair and makeup, no pressure. Here is one of the pictures from the day, Juliet was lovely and she is a really good singer.

Dermalogica New Age Smart SkinPerfect Primer SPF 30

When I received an invitation to attend the launch of Dermalogica’s new Age Smart SkinPerfect Primer Spf 30, I was elated. As you probably already know if you read this blog, I am a Dermalogica fan/ consumer for years, I always recommend using this brand as a regular facial treatment because I know it is excellent. If you go to a reputable salon like AsterSprings, therapists will go through a personalised service (Face Mapping as it is called), and all clients receive an accurate diagnosis of their specific skin needs. I have combination, sensitive skin and I use the Age Smart range because it addresses the problem of skin ageing, sun damage prevention and skin repair (On a daily basis I use toner, serum and eye cream).

This new Dermalogica product is an ideal match for those who use makeup and also need the skincare benefits. With ingredients like Tea extracts, Peptides, and Sodium Hyaluronate – what is not to love? One of its many virtues is that this primer contains SPF 30, and there is nothing than prevents ageing from happening like the DAILY use of a high spf factor! Trust me on this, if you want your skin to maintain its youth, protect it with spf. The Dermalogica New Age Smart SkinPerfect Primer SPF 30 is good for people with oily skin because it contains silicones that will ensure long lasting makeup application [foundation, bb cream or tinted moisturiser]. A neutral tint formulated without artificial fragrances and colors, this is a primer that’ll target enlarged pores, lines and uneven skin texture. Slather with abandon ladies, it is good for your skin.

Dermalogica is available at AsterSpring outlets in Singapore.

New! Make Up Forever Holodiam Collection

Make Up Forever’s newest addition to its range of products for this upcoming holiday season is stunning! It is an eyeshadow collection named HOLODIAM (limited edition), packed with 3D glitter and it is so beautiful, so unique, if you want to stand out during the party season, this is the product you want! HOLODIAM comes in these lovely shades (and each shade carries different hues, so fun and bling to highest power!). In the photos above, especially my eyes note the range of color, I had the white with the brown gold, it looked amazing after.

#301 Copper: Pink, orange and yellow highlights
#302 Plum: Turquoise, violet and pink highlights
#303 White: Gold, green and blue highlights
#4 Brown Gold: Yellow, green and blue highlights

(I particularly love the white as it can be used as a cheekbone and cupid’s bow highlighter). All the colors add an extra oomph to a shadow base in the eyes, that’s what HOLODIAM is all about! They can be used with a tiny drop of Aqua Seal by MUFE and adding a spray of Mist and Fix makeup setting spray.

Inside my Holiday bag from Make Up Forever was also a set of Aqua Eyes Pencils, these are waterproof must-haves for any makeup enthusiast and collector’s items like the MUFE Smokey Palette. I like them because not only they are smudge free but also can be used on the brows (the brown/ black shades). I also received Aqua Seal which is a liquid that transforms any powder into waterproof makeup. Last but not least came a set of limited edition gold lashes – see all the images below to get an idea. All these lovely items are available in Singapore at Sephora and the Make Up Forever Pro Shop on 36 Armenian Street.

Oxy Eye Energizing Treatment at AsterSpring

A little more than a week ago, I was invited to try an Oxyderm Eye Treatment at AsterSpring Singapore. This treatment is ideal for those with dark, puffy circles. As much as I use skincare around my eyes and rest, naturally and most probably genetically I tend to get dark circles in the inner corner of my eyes as well as mild puffiness, some days more than others. It is easy to correct dark circles with concealer but this does not make the problem go away.

Of course I jumped at the opportunity to give this treatment a go. Basically, the Oxyderm Eye Treatment uses a pulsed oxygen injection around the eye area, (it feels more like the tip of a spoonin your eye area, it is gentle, there is no hard pressure or needles whatsoever). First my skin was cleansed thoroughly, and then the eye area is prepped with a gel. Oxygen is then pumped in a calm circular motion all around AND under the eyes, providing deep moisture and oxygen. Oxygen is essential in the stimulation of collagen production, leaving the skin plumped and refreshed. This is a fast acting procedure, there is no extractions or rubbing, it is purely an eye nourishing and brightening eye facial. After, I received a good massage around the shoulder and my eyes/ face were nourished with some fantastic Dermalogica products, lovely feeling (as I am a HUGE Dermalogica consumer and believer).

After a few days, I definitely noticed my eyes being a lot brighter, the puffiness decreased some, overall a nice treatment. I’d highly recommend it to a bride a few days before your big day/ event or a busy lady who may not have the time to get all the rest but needs plumping and brightening. Thank you AsterSprings!

Events Coming Up in Singapore!

Apart from regular makeup duties, I wanted to annouce a few events coming up this October and November. This is your chance to meet, stalk, take a photo of me and come say hello – in most situations I am always happy to talk about makeup/ skincare or the latest bore that is Brad Pitt’s Chanel commercial (although I did Tweet about it and its spoof on SNL). Bad joke. OK so if you want to meet and mingle, here are your choices…

On October 25th from 7pm – 9pm, I will be doing a makeup workshop with the lovely Carla K stylist at Action Hair Salon located at Paragon Mall, 290 Orchard Road #05-08, Singapore. This is an accessories, hair and makeup hands-on workshop. I will be teaching how to do a day look, an office look and take this to an evening out on the town – there will also be door prizes from Maybelline. Ladies can sip champagne, cocktails and wine plus three amazing labels will be selling and showing the latest fashion. What’s not to like? Tickets are $89 and we are pretty much sold out but if you fancy coming, reply to this post NOW.

The ANZA Melbourne Cup is happening on Tuesday November 6th 2012 and I will be there doing touch ups with Vanity Trove Singapore as my sponsor. We will have a booth set up with a mini makeup cabinet using their one of a kind beauty troves plus there is a special promo for subscription during the event. Event tickets are for sale through ANZA and every year, the event has gotten bigger and better and yes, it sells out. In Australia the Melbourne race cup is a HUGE deal. Carla K will also be there doing fashion on the field so come dressed to impress! Event starts at 10:30AM at the Singapore Turf Club – it is ANZA’s biggest event of the year.

The Caring For Cambodia Project is having their 7th annual Caring Tea at the iconic Hotel Fort Canning. This year I am a sponsor of this charity and will be attending as a guest.

This is a very fancy buffet lunch so come hungry and ready to shop. Guests can bid on many exquisitely designed tableware settings or other valuable lucky draw and silent auction prizes. This is an opportunity to find unique holiday gifts. All proceeds from this event go to Cambodian school children. For more info on this charity, please go to this link.

Reminiscing and Spending Time in the Dead Sea

You might have noticed a mini lapse in my blogging, I was away for a week on a personal holiday in the land of Israel. To say I was beyond excited is an understatement, I’d always wanted to go see this beautiful country, float in the Dead Sea, eat, pray, admire the landscape. When one of my dear friends from New York told me she was getting married in Tel Aviv, I felt it was the perfect time to come, do her wedding day makeup plus be a tourist and soak up as much as possible. Lucky for me I was joined by two friends so it was a super fun girl holiday.

During one of our tours, we were taken to the AHAVA outlet near the city of Masada on the way to the Dead Sea. The AHAVA outlet was MOBBED, inside the shop there was a 20% off promotion so tourists were going nuts. I ended up getting just a couple of items, the AHAVA body Multivitamin Dry Oil scented in Mandarin and Cedarwood, divine and best applied right after a shower to get the full benefit. At first, I thought it might not suit my skin but it was fine, no reactions, the dry oil has a hint of citrus which I adore. The other item I bought was the AHAVA Facial Mud Exfoliator, a blend of Dead Sea minerals/ mud which help get rid of dead cells, something I do weekly while in the shower and pretty much on rotation with different brands. A mini haul of AHAVA, sweet.

The afternoon I spent at the Dead Sea was pure bliss. We arrived by bus to the location after a long walk in Masada, the bus ride was scenic and full of history. A UNESCO World Heritage Center, Masada is a bucket list must-see spot. At the top of Masada there is expansive views of the Judaean desert and the Dead Sea sprawled across. During the walk I covered my face/ neck in my Coolibar SPF 50 hat plus sunscreen [no sunburn], the heat was intensely dry, the tour was long with a lunch break – we were amazed by the views, the story of Masada, the tranquility of the desert, the clean air. Back to the Dead Sea, a little background this place, it is the lowest spot on earth, but also the saltiest and most mineral-laden body of water in the world. The Dead Sea joins Israel and Jordan, it is legendary as a source of healing and this I can understand why, floating is such a unique experience, does not happen anywhere else. Getting in the water is kind of surreal, you end up floating due to the high content of salt, I felt like a lump trying to flip and ended up with salt in my eyes (not so cool). I stayed for about 10 minutes inside the Dead Sea, felt very calming and so nice after. Of course I covered myself in black mud, scrubbed my body/ face, sat for a while observing and enjoying the moment. My skin felt amazing after a cool rinse outside in the showers. There are changing rooms, towels for rent and a little shop where you can buy refreshments. I’ll definitely go back, would love to try the Jordan side which I also hear is quite nice.

One last thing you see in my images is sunflower seeds. Why you ask? Note the size of them! They are massive and so tasty, at my friend’s bbq I nearly ate a bowl of seeds. Sunflower kernels is one of the finest sources of B-complex group of vitamins and 35% of Vitamin E (great for the skin!!!). During my time in Israel, my skin was fine, no itching as it went dry from the rashes I had during September, the climate and food was Mediterranean 100%, warm days, fresh October evenings.

I want to send a huge shot out to everyone I met on my trip, all kind, warm and generous souls both in Israel and my mini journey in Palestine, I can’t tell you enough the profound experience I lived in the cities of Tel Aviv, Jerusalem, Masada, and Bethlehem – places where various faiths converge and collide. This is what I love about travel, it leaves me wanting for more!

Blogger Swap From UK – Sleek Makeup and Makeup Academy (MUA)

Through Twitter I met a lovely beauty blogger buddy Grace aka All That Slap. We agreed to swap products since I am in Asia and Grace is in the UK, in our case we don’t get a chance to try everything out and both Grace and I are self confessed makeup/ skincare lovers – a perfect match. Here in Asia, we get loads of BB creams, face masks and whitening (brightening) makeup/ skincare, on the flipside not a great deal of good drugstore makeup like British beauty lovers get.

Grace and I agreed on what we wished for, I wanted anything that was British makeup and she wanted BB creams. In my lovely parcel, I got some cool stuff, thank you lovely Grace. My absolute favourite is from Make Up Academy (MUA); this is a British makeup brand I know from SuperDrug UK, very affordable drugstore makeup, bold colors, nail varnish and essentials galore. I got a blue gel eyeliner called Tribe which I loved, (It went on Instagram immediately after I applied it, didn’t need to set it or even put shadow after). You can use it almost as a shadow for the whole lid, I liked the color intensity so much I ended up painting the whole lid. (Sorry for the grainy pic). MUA ships worldwide by the way!

The other product I loved is the Sleek Blusher in Pomegranate, a very deep pink which is super pigmented and matte (bonus). Sleek blushers get compared a lot to NARS due to their pigment and level of quality. Earlier this year I blogged about the Sleek Face Contour Kit – which is another duo that is top notch and reasonably priced I might add. **Sleek makeup is available in Singapore at Luxola.com
