New Work!

This lovely photo is a collaboration with Polished Presence styling, Jay Nodalo behind the lens, and yours truly on hair and makeup.  I must say the styling job Anna did was impeccable and am so thrilled we were able to work together, I highly recommend her if you are in Singapore! And of course, you know I am going to give a shot out to Jay because he is fun to work with, we share a similar aesthetic in beauty shoots and most of all, he lets me run with the makeup/ hair creative part which is a dream come true for a makeup artist.

On Rhianna our model, I test drove Graftobian HD foundation [love it], her complexion had a pink undertone and the foundation worked quite well under the lights, NARS blush was used on her cheeks. Because Rhianna has divine red hair, I decided to use a subtle cool tone on her eyes. The headpiece and outfit were so awesome, the makeup just worked with the elements.

Favorite Everyday Products

Here is a breakdown of my favorite every day products, the kind you can’t live without (mascara and tinted moisturizer) plus eye makeup remover when I get home.

1) Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer SPF 20 (Sand) – a lightweight, reasonable coverage tinted moisturizer. This is an all day product which for the most part DOES NOT oil up or get creased. I love its texture, this blends smoothly into skin and evens out quite nicely. Perfect for Singapore weather (also great in humid and dry weather).

2) Lancome Hypnose Mascara (Black) – this was a tip from a wonderful client a few weeks back. I was at a job and this super nice client pulls Hypnose out of her makeup bag and tells me to see her lashes after three coats. SOLD. The results were lush, full bodied lashes, after a bit of brushing out excess I so impressed with the length effect, I placed my order the same evening.

Later on when it is time to remove mascara or waterproof eye products …

3) Makeup Forever Sens’Eyes (Waterproof eye makeup remover) – the best makeup remover for sensitive eyes and waterproof anything (mascara, eyeshadow, eyeliner, gel liner). This formula will clear those pesky makeup traces and won’t leave you racoon-eyed the next morning. And it comes in a handy small bottle which travels well I might add.

What Is a Bridal Makeup Trial?

This post is all about the bridal makeup trial. Lately there has been an influx of emails and questions regarding this topic and I feel I should address it. A makeup trial is simply a test run of what your dream makeup is for your wedding day. In this instance, the makeup artist and client meet in person to do a run through, go over skincare (in my opinion paramount to beautiful skin on your wedding day), test foundations (I work with mainly with MUFE HD foundation, Illamasqua Skinbase or Face Atelier), AND go over any skin problems/ sensitivities.

Also, think of your makeup trial like a bridal beauty plan, where the chosen makeup artist and the bride work together to get the most radiant and best looking skin for your wedding day. In most cases, if it isn’t already in place, I will make skincare product recommendations and suggestions to all my future brides, send brides reminders weeks in advance for things like facials, eyebrow threading, hair cuts, manicures and conditioning treatments. During a makeup trial potential bridal clients get a feel for the makeup artist’s bridal-style philosophy, her personality and whether this suits or not. After the bridal portfolio, a first impression is just as important.

I should clarify this, a makeup trial is not a makeup lesson or an opportunity to score a free makeup look for the evening. During the trial, we will swatch foundation, try eyeshadow colors, blusher but this does not mean you are going home all dolled up. It is advisable to take pictures during your trial to get an idea of what your makeup might look like! Your makeup artist’s main task is to make you look your best in front of the lenses of the photographer/ videographer AND a variety of lights – natural indoors/ outdoors, day/ night. This may be a very natural subtle look or a bit more dramatic, all depends on the personal style of the bride. I hope this clarifies some questions and offers a bit more insight on what the makeup trial mystery is all about.

Inspiration From Gloria Vanderbilt

It’s been a while since I haven’t done one of these. Inspiration is everything to me.

A few months ago, I picked up a copy of The World of Gloria Vanderbilt, a book about this American lady, her paintings and life story which I highly recommend checking out. Being a huge Anderson Cooper fan is how I came to Gloria Vanderbilt, his beloved and inspirational mother. What hasn’t she achieved in life? She is an artist, perfumista, jean designer, mother, model for Harpers Bazaar and most of all a woman who has reinvented herself over and over (something I relate to very much). This dame also lived such tragedy and deep sorrows in her life from a young age, it is so refreshing to see a person be so full of zest at 88 years old. I urge you to watch her being interviewed by Anderson Cooper or read her book.

Because we are a beauty blog, I also want to bring attention to Ms Vanderbilt’s unique sense of style and her art. Photo credit Gloria Vanderbilt by Richard Avedon for Harper’s Bazaar, 1960′s via impulseandvision.blogspot.com

Skinfactory Eye Dream Honey Patches Review

A while back I received this eye mask inside my Bella Box, liked it so much, I ended up getting more. What’s wonderful about Korean brand Skinfactory Eye Dream Patch is the after effect around the eyes which include major hydration, smooth skin and less puffiness. I tend to favor these types of masks as they can be kept in the fridge quite easily and along with the cooling effect, you will notice a big difference if you leave them on for at least twenty minutes. Honey is a known natural humectant which means it has an ability to attract moisture and hold on to it. Big plus.

Also, especially for my readers across the pond or not familiar with Asian skincare, Korea’s skincare is renowned for its anti-aging and brightening products (think supple and glowy), after all BB Cream was created in Korea. **BB stands for balm and blemish, a sort of tinted moisturizer for problem skin with spf. It is no surprise that several articles in American and British glossies have been written solely focusing on Korean brands, check out Marie Claire USA here.

So, get on the case and trust Skinfactory’s Eye Dream Honey Patch, makeup artist and consumer approved! PS. All my brides always get the “use a Korean mask, if you can’t get to a facial” speech from me for obvious reasons.

In Singapore, Skinfactory is available online at Beauty Finest as well as SASA stores island-wide.

It is National Lipstick Day

To celebrate National Lipstick Day, I’d like to share my ultimate lipsticks, Makeup Forever and Obssessive Compulsive Cosmetics lip tars. If you are ever going to get a lipstick, get yourself either or both! They are worth it. Color will last, trust me on this one. Lipstick can save the day and makes a gorgeous statement all on its own.

Behind the Scenes Work

I’ve been busy again with some very fun and HOT HOT HOT days here in Singapore. This collage was taken on set during a video commercial promo for a very fancy French winery using my I-phone and Instagram (If you are in Instagram, I am Norahlovesmakeup_mua). We were in Duxton Hill and the feel was a Parisian cafe. It was like 33 degrees outside and as humid as it gets, I spent a lot of time blotting the talents and making sure the shine was at bay. I was also covered with SPF 50 head to toe.

Another Week Another Lovely Face

For this makeup, I used a variety of products. First of all, I prepped the skin with Vichy Normaderm toner, followed by Avene Diroséal Anti-Redness Skincare Lotion, Embryolisse moisturizer and Makeup Forever Al Mat primer in the T-zone. I have to tell you, French skincare is my most trusted weapon for problem skin [this includes my own]. You wouldn’t be able to tell from the unretouched I-phone photo but the model had a reaction to the heat and came to set visibly red and with dry/ oily areas all over her face. Trust in skincare and some makeup to take care of problems!

I used Graftobian HD foundation and Makeup Forever HD blush, MUFE Flash palette and MUFE Aqua pencils to smudge the eyes and eyeliner. The eyebrows were filled in with Illamasqua eyeliner and on the lips I used my OCC liptar mixed with MUFE Flash palette.
