Little Me

A few years ago I mulled over the idea of taking up makeup artistry full time. Lots of pondering took place, thinking and more imagining what it’d be like, highly unusual for someone who often decides on impulse [Call it with heart]. Enrolled myself in a class at Makeup Forever Singapore then in London at MUSE; I decided not to tell anyone other than my husband (he, of course, was 100% a fan of this idea). A year before this, I had injured my right wrist badly, dealt with two surgeries, months of physical therapy, a broken ego and pain. Little me though, I am persistent one, just ask my family. And like most humans I may flounder but definitely never give up. Believe me when I tell the story of moving to New York city on my own, with no fixed job, savings, AND a bag full of shoes. As many say, the rest is history. I feel that the story of my makeup career is still in the making [and that is what keeps me motivated]. Nothing makes me happier than putting makeup on someone and the face of a satisfied client.

Today I received the great news that I’ve been nominated for Cozycot’s Tribute to 100 Inspiring Women in Singapore, in commemoration of International Women’s Day. I am so honoured/ stoked/ happy/ ecstatic, how can’t I not be? Thank you Cozycot!

Back From Krabi / Some Fab Products Used

Krabi, Thailand. It is a slice of heaven, relaxation, lovely waters and sun. A good friend of mine from London and I spent five glorious days in this small beach called Railay. The sun was intense and though as per usual I spent a good portion under an umbrella/ hat, there were days when the waters and sand lured me in. It was so hard to resist! Being in a remote location is wonderful, I’ve been lucky this is my 2nd holiday since the year began. (Please see my smile on the left and all the people on our boat – life was grand!).

While on this trip, I tried out a couple of new products from Palmer’s and Organix (Ps. I am a regular Palmer’s body cream user, I love cocoa butter). First was Palmer’s Cocoa Butter Body Wash, as most days I spent it outdoors and trying to shield from sunburn, this body wash seemed like the perfect solution, it is gentle as a daily shower cream, leaves my skin soft and contains no sulfates, success! Cocoa butter is the perfect ingredient for dry/ sensitive skin and sun exposure.

As for my hair, it was very tough keeping it from frizzing so on the days that I managed to get it blow dried straight/ neat for the evening (I had it up in a bun most of the day), Organix Cherry Blossom Ginseng spray is what I used. Salt water and chlorine do lots of damage to hair. Most days, I found myself spraying generously. The results were fantastic, shine and very manageable hair. Organix Cherry Blossom is a sulfate free spray. Basically sulfates dry and damage hair shaft so it is best to avoid them if you want to keep your tresses healthy.

Palmer’s and Organix are available in Singapore at most pharmacies island-wide (Guardian, Watsons, Robinsons, John Little).

A Maybelline Event

Ask and you shall receive. The universe must have been listening. On Pinterest, Maybelline 24HR Cream Shadow is on my wish list. Imagine the excitement when I received an invite to a blogger event on Sat Feb 25th at the lovely Covelli Italian Bistro at Orchard 313.

The event was a nice lunch and the unveiling of new products for the Asian market. The new goodies launched were Volum’ Express Magnum Ultra Comb mascara (WOW, love this super slick comb, it pretty separates the lashes much like a real comb, thickens them with no mess AND is waterproof), BB cream SPF 50 (music to my ears, excellent for under eyes and eye area – I don’t use BB all over since it tends to be overload for my skin), Maybelline Masterlight White pencil (for brightening eyes), and Maybelline Jelly Blushers in #02 and #04 colors (cream blush with soft texture and not greasy at all). See the cool gifts on my goodie bag?

This event had a fashion show, a presentation by a makeup artist and lastly a chance to learn more about these new products. As a makeup artist from a non-Asian background in skincare, it is fantastic to learn trends and product preferences here in Asia (BB cream and lashes/ mascara rank high on the list in my opinion). I had a lovely time observing, learning and listening.

Thank you Maybelline SG! I am loving my new goodies, the mascara is a MUST HAVE.

Living For Gucci Autumn 2012 Makeup

Can’t wait to try this lip, it is so amazing! Makeup artist Pat Mcgrath created a burgundy rich lip color with bleached eyebrows and clean skin.

Anna dello Russo Wisdom

“Invent your job. Anything can be [possible] now.”

I just read a fabulous interview with Anna dello Russo in IFB (Independent Fashion Bloggers). It was a hugely inspirational read. Anna Dello Russo is currently the Editor At Large and creative consultant for Vogue Japan.
She is quirky and unique which is why I love her. Another thing I really enjoy is her rules/ quotes section on her website, they are so good and definitely full of sound advice.

Rachel K BB Cream Review

One day while browsing at Watsons I noticed Rachel K BB cream from Korea [suspense!]. However, there were no tester products available! Since I love trying out new BB creams especially those with labels like natural or neutral color shades, I became even more intrigued. Turns out that Rachel K has a fab PR team and as soon as I reached out, a tube arrived in the mail for me to try.

First things first, Rachel K BB cream has a lovely scent, it has to be said! In terms of color, for myself, the shade was a tad too light for my face (I am more yellow undertoned and this had a lot of pink base which is does not work for me), I still like to use it as a concealer under my eyes though and on the eyelids. Why? It works very well as a brightener and since it is waterproof it stays on nicely. I like the texture, it is medium coverage I’d say, Rachel K blends quite well (not cakey at all). Another plus is that it contains SPF 35 so an added bonus to the protection of your skin. Maybe I should get sunkissed?!! Rachel K is available in Singapore at Watsons.

From their FB page:

Mineral CC (Colour Control) Cream is much-improved and refined BB cream (Blemish Balm) created and developed in Japan and Korea. It is formulated with pure minerals, making it suitable for all skin types including highly sensitive ones as the mineral ingredients do not irritate or damage the skin. It comes in shades: natural, neutral and sun-kissed.

Faces of NYFW Fall 2012

Ever since I got into makeup, every fashion week I am checking my Twitter feed and looking at Tumblr blogs and now Pinterest boards. Why? I observe trends, color and everything that is current in makeup/ hair/ clothes. For Fall 2012 (or Autumn as it is described in the UK), I noticed a lot of nude/ clean skin, red lips and winged eyeliner in color (Anna Sui with Pat Mcgrath on makeup).

From the gallery above on the left is the Proenza Schuler runway, center is Diesel and right is Christian Siriano.

I also noticed more and more Asian models. Someone told me this week in Singapore, there aren’t enough Asian girls in fashion. While some of it may be true, I also think this is evolving for the better (this also includes black, middle eastern and Latina models). Also assembled some Twitpics from backstage, credit is given to Nordstrom Beauty at Michael Kors, makeup genius Pat Mcgrath at Anna Sui and Gucci Westman for Oscar de la Renta.

Tom Ford Wisdom

“Every woman needs a perfectly cut, tailored suit for day; a black cocktail dress; a smoking; a perfect pair of pumps with high heels. The most important key to being well dressed, however, is for a woman to wear something that suits her style and body shape. A woman who is confident and knows what looks best will always look great.”

I love Tom Ford. After I saw his Visionaries documentary on OWN, my admiration for him grew even more. The film has made its way online, a definite must-watch for creative types. He also directed, produced and co-wrote ‘A Single Man’, an acclaimed film with Colin Firth and Julianne Moore.

Grammys 2012 = Lashes Were A-Plenty

It was all about the lashes and glamourous eye makeup at the biggest night in music, the Grammys.

I can’t wait to see the actual beauty breakdowns and makeup artist details but for now the images will have to do. One thing was for certain the ladies of music were dressed to impress with lovely makeup and big hair. My favourites were Adele, Alicia Keys and Carrie Underwood. This is how you do it on a night out, making a statement. I loved the lashes on both Carrie Underwood and Adele, it looked like a combination of individual extensions and cluster lashes.
