Singapore

Back in the USA!

facebook logo
After six years in Singapore, time has come for me to return to the USA. Living in Singapore was wonderful, it opened a door to creativity, resourcefulness and understanding, so different from living in New York and London. I entered a world so foreign to my own, it taught me to learn and accept a new ideal of beauty and appreciate what I had familiarity with. While in Asia, I made the best lemonade I could with my career, personal life, travel opportunities, and also embraced a healthy lifestyle. If any of my peers, clients and editorial friends are reading this, I owe you the trust and opportunities I had and will be forever grateful, please come visit me and keep in touch. My last weeks in Singapore were so packed with endless to-do’s, packing and quietly reflecting, I didn’t have a proper going away with anyone, goodbye’s are awful.

This weekend I will be attending the New York Makeup Show, a NARS tweet up, a blogger preview event with James Vincent and workshops by Make Up Forever and Temptu Pro. Last year, I was lucky to be in Chicago for the same event and this year, so delighted to be a part of the NY show. What I love about the Makeup Show aside from all the workshops and shopping experience, is the opportunity to listen and meet renowned fellow artists and get inspired.

I have a shopping list and of course I will be sharing my thoughts post-show. If you want real-time updates, I will be Instagram-ing and on Twitter. For Instagram, I can be found at Norahlovesmakeup_mua and on norah_s on Twitter.

Stress Over Holiday Shopping? Go For A Massage!

1255004_88259036A few weeks ago, I had the worst neck pain and was completely overwhelmed with all the holiday season to-do’s plus my job is a very physical one that involves standing, bending, pressure. In an effort to sort my muscles out and have an hour of bliss, I booked a massage at AsterSpring in Centre Point.

The first order of business was to let my therapist know where I felt pain and tightness, for me it is the shoulders and lower legs. As soon as I was done with the questionnaire, I was brought into the room for my Anti Stress Body Balancing massage session. To start, I had a lovely dry brush all over to help activate the circulation followed by a warm towel to soothe pre-massage. As the therapist worked into my muscles, she used Dermalogica’s Stress Relief Oil an essential oils blend of Sandalwood, Lavender, Orange and Clary Sage, naturally-purifying extracts of Tea Tree, Lemon, and Ylang-Ylang. The feeling is very non-greasy and unlike other massage therapy spas, the effect is gentle on the skin and will leave a subtle hydration. All my point pressures were done from my ankles, legs, shoulders, wrists and plus an amazing head massage! The therapist did various kinds of massage strokes like kneading, pulling, wringing and gliding on various parts of the body, all aimed to be gentle enough, this is not a painful type of treatment. Excellent bedside manners, super clean and professional, that’s how I’d describe my massage experience at AsterSpring.

After my one hour was up, I noticed I had fallen asleep, a good sign that the massage had done wonders. A post massage consultation followed and I was adviced to drink lukewarm water and keep hydrated. This treatment is aimed to help relax, relieve muscle tension and help circulation. Thank you AsterSpring!

Events Coming Up in Singapore!

Apart from regular makeup duties, I wanted to annouce a few events coming up this October and November. This is your chance to meet, stalk, take a photo of me and come say hello – in most situations I am always happy to talk about makeup/ skincare or the latest bore that is Brad Pitt’s Chanel commercial (although I did Tweet about it and its spoof on SNL). Bad joke. OK so if you want to meet and mingle, here are your choices…

On October 25th from 7pm – 9pm, I will be doing a makeup workshop with the lovely Carla K stylist at Action Hair Salon located at Paragon Mall, 290 Orchard Road #05-08, Singapore. This is an accessories, hair and makeup hands-on workshop. I will be teaching how to do a day look, an office look and take this to an evening out on the town – there will also be door prizes from Maybelline. Ladies can sip champagne, cocktails and wine plus three amazing labels will be selling and showing the latest fashion. What’s not to like? Tickets are $89 and we are pretty much sold out but if you fancy coming, reply to this post NOW.

The ANZA Melbourne Cup is happening on Tuesday November 6th 2012 and I will be there doing touch ups with Vanity Trove Singapore as my sponsor. We will have a booth set up with a mini makeup cabinet using their one of a kind beauty troves plus there is a special promo for subscription during the event. Event tickets are for sale through ANZA and every year, the event has gotten bigger and better and yes, it sells out. In Australia the Melbourne race cup is a HUGE deal. Carla K will also be there doing fashion on the field so come dressed to impress! Event starts at 10:30AM at the Singapore Turf Club – it is ANZA’s biggest event of the year.

The Caring For Cambodia Project is having their 7th annual Caring Tea at the iconic Hotel Fort Canning. This year I am a sponsor of this charity and will be attending as a guest.

This is a very fancy buffet lunch so come hungry and ready to shop. Guests can bid on many exquisitely designed tableware settings or other valuable lucky draw and silent auction prizes. This is an opportunity to find unique holiday gifts. All proceeds from this event go to Cambodian school children. For more info on this charity, please go to this link.

Bella Box Event Highlights

It is hard to believe I finally attended a Bella Box event! It’s been well over a year since I subscribed and between all the work/ obligations I attend to, every chance for attendance to an event eluded me.

The Bella Box girls had a lovely T.G.I.F. early evening soiree at a trendy rooftop hotel in Tiong Bahru. The evening came with some nibbles and bubbly to showcase some amazing brands. Before I get to the beauty items I most liked, I thought it was super clever to have stations and live demos of every brand. Some I was familiar with and some were new, it was a makeup artist’s dream event including food, drink and different skincare/ makeup/ hair products.

The items which got my attention right away were Caudalie’s new range Vinosource. I tried the Vinosource S.O.S Thirst-Quenching Serum – what a treat. I asked for the ingredients info and my eyes lit when I saw Hyaluronic acid, Grape Water, Grape-seed Polyphenols – the ingredient in bold is a MUST if you want real results for your anti-aging skincare in a serum. This compound is present in our body but begins to dwindle as we get older. Using an Hyaluronic acid serum will help to restore moisture levels of the skin and absorb right away. Love this product.

Next was Bioderma Sensibio H20 Makeup Remover – another gem I had heard of from one of my French friends but had not tried on my own. This makeup remover requires no cleansing after so if you’d had a long night out and can’t get to a sink, Bioderma will take off all the debris without the need to rinse, waterproof and hard to remove lipstick, mascara, foundation, EVERYTHING. I liked that there were two formulas for sensitive, dry and oily skin so it is not a one size fits all makeup remover. In my goodie bag, I also found a Sensibio Eye Gel (Thank you! I will be testing this out in an upcoming long haul flight). Seeing several layers of different products being removed with one wipe using Bioderma was pretty cool! Bioderma is available at Guardian in Singapore.

Aveda needs no introduction, it is a favorite brand since a long time ago. I use the Chakra Body Spray as well as the Aveda’s Smooth Infusion Glossing Straightener for my hair when I blow dry. The Aveda girls had me try a Blue Oil Therapy complete with a shoulder massage, the scent of mint was lovely and so calming. This was truly a wonderful mini spa experience, thanks Aveda.

Last but not least, Elizabeth Arden had a booth with makeup. Apart from the Elizabeth Arden skincare range, I had not tried any of the makeup line so this was of course, a new experience. The eyeshadows had some great autumn colors, they were buildable and pretty for a night out. I got to take home a single eyeshadow and the staff were accomodating and kind enough to show me all the colors.

My most favorite Friday night in a while! I should add Petronille was also there doing her demo, I did not sample anything as I’ve done an extensive series of reviews on her wonderful skincare range which I highly endorse. Well done Bella Box girls, thanks for all he goodies and this fun event.

Blogging Has Not Stopped

Hello my lovely readers, I am still here. I haven’t updated as much due to a crazy last couple of weeks with work plus an allergy I am dealing with due to the current haze in the air in Singapore. Believe it or not, the air quality has given me an intermittent sinus infection, migraines from the pressure around my airway passage, burning eyes and lot of itching/ hives. I feel like a broken record with my constant allergic ailments, honest truth.

Thanks to a Traditional Chinese medicine lady Dr Tan and a magic tablet called Sudafed, I’ve been able to cope although some days/ evenings are bad. This is something new in my life, not having the access to Allegra, Claritin (allergy medicine) or Aveeno and creams over the counter like the ones in the USA. Currently and thank goodness for my family in California, I use a fantastic ointment plus some new medicine (soon) to relieve these symptoms.

Workwise, I have been showered with many opportunities these past few weeks. I’ve just done editorial work for Expat Living magazine, Australia/ New Zeland magazine (a cover no less), Human Resources, Simply Her, weekly bridal work, my corporate clients and a book cover for a world-renowned author. Every month something new and wonderful happens and I can’t begin to tell you how exciting it is. Plus I still try to squeeze test work because this is also massively important to me, practice and more practice. In the words of one of my makeup artist idols, Alex Box from Illamasqua “Best career advice I can give – there are no short cuts”. Keep chasing your dream!

New Work For Agency of The Year Awards June 2012 (Marketing Magazine Singapore)

I am super proud of this new editorial work, it is what makeup artists dream of, close-ups of lips, eyes, face, work has to be very precise (PRESSURE IS ON and we love that). When I got the news that this shoot was happening, I was beyond excited, this image was the cover of Agency of the Year Awards in Singapore for Marketing magazine.

Even better, the color of the lips is something I custom created myself using my trusted Makeup Forever Flash palette and on the face all Makeup Forever HD foundation for a clean finish. For this tone, I mixed a few hues and topped up with some gloss, although I’d say it was more a matte finish on the picture itself.

In Singapore you can purchase MUFE palette at the pro-store.

Shoot in Sentosa

Lately the skies have been glorious in Singapore, especially in the late afternoon. Although the winds were really strong the day this photo was taken, the makeup stayed on well. I used very little makeup on Rachel and the lips were all the way OCC lip tar. Photo by Mark Pascasio.

Le Pétronille Skincare Challenge

I’ve started trying a new range of skincare developed and manufactured in Singapore by Pétronille Houdart. Luxola Singapore the online beauty purveyor of fabulous brands and amazing cosmetics will be carrying Pétronille Cosmetics and I couldn’t be more thrilled! My approach to beauty is consistent, I tend to stick to staples (night cream, serum and an SPF brightening moisturizer) and am always willing to try new things and share new finds. People often compliment my skin, of course it is major flattering to hear that though I must tell you, I take care of it religiously since years ago and especially since I became a mother.

Last week, I began using the day and night creams topped up with an anti-aging elixir and a brightening booster (also known as whitening). So far, so good. My skin absorbs the night time cream particularly well! I have combination skin, this is a challenge when I sleep, even without the air conditioning my skin dries up in some areas even in the humid weather conditions of Singapore. The Pétronille Regenerative night cream has worked beautifully, I wake up hydrated which is fantastic. I am still testing out the daytime cream, more on this later.

[As part of my trial I received all the Pétronille skincare products for free and will be discussing them every week on my Twitter feed and on Instagram at norahlovesmakeup]

A Beauty-fied Box

Today a box of goodies arrived from Vanity Trove! Several products in sample size came in this super elegant package. Vanity Trove is a new service launched in Singapore offering high end skincare and makeup to your doorstep, customers will receive a beauty box every month for a a fee of $25 SG. A personalised beauty profile can be created when you join so that samples can be catered to specific wants and needs.

Now the moment of suspense, what was in the box? First of all, coffee beans from a place called Danns Daily – I live for my cuppa of Joe and will definitely try this place in Bedok (fairtrade, organic and all brewed with alkaline water).

Since it is few days away from NYE and naturally I plan to kill it with my makeup/ beauty regime pre and post game, tonight I have a beauty assignment cut out for me. It will include trying the SK-II Facial Treatment Gentle Cleanser (really looking forward to this!), SK-II Facial Treatment Clear Lotion followed by Snail Street AC Trouble Mask, a product that promises pore, oil and trouble care for the face. Finally, I shall put on the Lancome Genifique Youth Activator before retiring to bed.

I should also mention there is also a Virtuose mascara sample by Lancome and Skinc Reinforce Ceramide (plus a $50 voucher). Thank you Vanity Trove!!!!
