Lately, I’ve been reading more beauty and makeup books. Luckily, I chanced upon an opportunity to review “The Green Beauty Rules” by makeup artist Paige Padgett. This piece I thought would be an interesting read, mostly out of curiosity and with the desire to learn more about the world of green/ organic/ cruelty free skincare and cosmetics. While I try my best to use more organic skincare for myself, there are lots of terms and definitions I am still learning about.
Paige Padgett is a makeup artist and her expertise in this field of green beauty is quite extensive. The first chapters of this book go into great detail on the definitions and terminology that we should be familiar with. Did you know that the words “organic” and “natural are not regulated by the FDA for use on personal care products? What I also found very useful was the section about vegan and gluten free products. I have some vegan brands I use and like a lot, like OCC for example. Of course not all of the cosmetics I use on clients are vegan, it is hard to find just one brand that I can use which would work on everyone’s skin and make them happy. That being said, for professional use there is some room for choices with cruelty brands and organic makeup, again I don’t necessarily have everything in those categories.
One of my biggest praises for Paige’s book is the suggestion on brand names, in skincare and makeup alike that have clean and non carcinogenic ingredients. My other favorite nugget is the 80-20 approach with your makeup/ skincare. This means if you are using 100 products daily, at least eighty of them should be chemically safe. I am also happy to report that some personal favorites of mine like Marie Veronique (now called True Nature Botanicals), Dr Hauschka, Koh Gen Do Moisture Foundation and Juice Beauty are in listed as one to use because of their formulation.
Overall, this was a super interesting and insightful read. If you are looking to expand your knowledge and get some perspective on the topic of safe beauty, Paige’s “The Green Beauty Rules” is an excellent resource to have in your bookcase.
